The Body Shop has long had a reputation for caring about the environment and animal cruelty. Now they plan to take things to a whole new level with a new type of plastic storage container for their beauty products. The cosmetics company plans to be the first in the beauty industry to utilize this new product, known as AirCarbon, to create their plastic packaging.
Greenhouse Gases in Plastic Storage Products
AirCarbon is a thermoplastic which is more cost effective and works just as well as the oil-based plastic used in The Body Shop’s current storage containers although it’s created in a very different way. AirCarbon actually extracts greenhouse gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide, then isolates and polymerizes them in order to create AirCarbon. It’s produced by Newlight Technologies who have been working on AirCarbon for the last 10 years.
An Enthusiastic Partnership
Newlight CEO Mark Herrema says of the partnership, “The Body Shop has a tradition of leadership in environmental innovation, and we are very pleased to partner with them with the aim of introducing AirCarbon materials into the beauty industry. Caps and containers can be more than caps and containers; they can be a part of how we create a better world. With The Body Shop, we are replacing oil with carbon that would have otherwise become part of the air and changing the role of materials in society.”
The Body Shop’s International Director of Sustainability Christopher Davis showed enthusiasm for their new plastic storage packaging stating, “We are excited about our new research partnership with Newlight. We share their philosophy that a more sustainable future can be achieved through working together, embracing innovation and driving new ways of thinking.”
The Protect the Planet Goal
The Body Shop plans to have 70% of their plastic storage made with AirCarbon by 2020. This is all part of their “Protect The Planet Goal” which also involves creating wildlife areas at their corporate sites for beehives, using LED lighting in stores to use less electricity, recycling packaging, and reducing water usage.
The Body Shop was founded by Anita Roddick in 1976 and has always been forward thinking when it comes to eco-friendly principles. They were very early to come out against animal testing and have always encouraged people to return their bottles to the stores for refills. They will keep this tradition going with the AirCarbon plastic storage containers which they will also encourage people to return to the store for refills.
The Innovative Powers of Plastic
The revolutionary process for creating AirCarbon shows the innovative powers of plastic when put to good use by a creative mind. Plastic storage containers made in this way will allow the fossil fuels, usually used to create these plastic products, to remain where they belong: in the ground.
If other businesses follow the lead of The Body Shop and switch to using AirCarbon, which is both equal in quality to other plastics and more cost effective, it may set a new precedent in plastic storage. With these leaps forward in plastic products, the world moves closer to a harmonic balance with the environment that will serve to protect the earth for generations to come.
